Learning the management of malaria from Timika City

From June 21 to June 23, 2022, the SHEPI team paid a visit to Timika City to gain firsthand insights into the ongoing malaria surveillance processes in the area. Prior research had been conducted on strengthening the healthcare system to improve primaquine effectiveness in Timika. This visit offered opportunities for substantial improvements in the healthcare system for malaria management.

On the first day, June 21, 2022, the team visited the Mimika District Health Office to engage in discussions about the management of malaria cases and the challenges specific to the Mimika District. Following the discussions, the team continued their activities with a visit to the Mimika District General Hospital (RSUD) to meet and get acquainted with Timika’s research team, including site PI dr. Jeanne Rini Poespoprodjo, Sp.A., Ph.D.

The second day, June 22, 2022, involved activities at one of the community health centers in Timika, Puskesmas Wania. Observations were made on the surveillance activities at the community health center, including the Malaria Corner, which is an innovation developed by Timika’s research team. The SHEPI team directly observed how data collection and malaria data recording were performed at Puskesmas Wania to ensure high-quality data reporting to the Mimika District Health Office.

On the final day, June 23, 2022, the visit was concluded with closing activities to mark the end of the SHEPI team’s visit to Timika.
